The Parent Hope Project
Parents are hard wired to protect, comfort and support their children’s development which is why it is really difficult when mental, behavioural and emotional symptoms begin to appear in children and adolescents. Most mainstream parenting approaches and mental health inteventions focus on changing the child’s behaviour. The Parent Hope Project aims to help children and young people with these struggles by working with the parents. Based in Family Systems principles, a parent can alter family patterns if willing to work on themselves with out trying to fix or change others including partners and the child experiencing the struggle.
The parent hope project developed by Dr Jenny Brown aims to support parents cope with their reactions towards their sympotmatic child/adolescent and consider their role in encouraging their young person’s potential for healthy development.
‘"When parents shift their energies away from trying to fix or change their child
and invest in what is in their control as parents,
new hopeful pathways open up’’. Dr Jenny Brown
The Parent Hope Project aims to:
Optimise the way you support your child’s wellbeing
Shift focus to yourself rather than trying to change the young person
Promote more autonomy and responsibility in your child through how you manage yourself
Establish a longer-term project of parent leadership. This is not a quick fix, but with changes to old patterns of interaction, the child is helped to gradually improve the way they manage their own life challenges.
